How can I properly acclimate the tool to the weather?

  • Updated

The PLT 400 is a highly accurate and sophisticated layout tool that relies on electronic distance measurements to be accurate. Because the weather conditions affect the tool’s measurements, care needs to be taken by the end user to indicate what the temperature and barometer reading is when it is being used. It is a best practice to 1) ensure the temperature and barometer settings in the software are accurate, and 2) that you give the tool 10-15 minutes of exposure to the new temperature from storage before use.

How do I make sure my weather settings are accurate on the tablet?

Go to the settings gear (1), click on “PPM” in the side menu (2), set your barometer pressure and your temperature for your location (3). Online weather websites and apps should have this information readily available. This information will set your “parts per million”, which allows the tool to automatically adjust its Electronic Distance Measurements (EDM) to the environment it is measuring in.

Does the PLT 400 do any internal calibrations on its own to acclimate to the weather?

Yes, the tool will automatically need to run its own calibration as the internal temperature of the tool changes. As the tool itself gradually gets warm or cool, it will run a calibration check every 10-20° C of internal temperature change. Again, this is why giving the tool 10-15 minutes of weather exposure before use allows the tool to acclimate its internal temperature to the temperature of where you are working. It will reduce sudden calibrations due to internal temperature changes.
