Sometimes, when you turn on the PLC 600, you will see a command window (CMD window) that looks like this:
It will say, "Waiting until SIM is initialized," followed by "Still waiting..."
What is causing this issue and how can I fix it?
This issue is caused by a language mismatch during the SIM initialization process - the tablet must be set to the English language by default for the initialization process script to be recognized. To resolve this issue, simply switch the Windows display language back to English and perform a full shutdown followed by a restart. You can then change the language back to what you prefer.
NOTE: a full shutdown must be performed by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds, rather than performing it from the start menu. More details below.
Additional Background on Why the Issue Occurs if Helpful:
When a PLC 600 with a SIM card is started for the first time (or after a factory reset), several setup steps run in the background:
Driver and App Installation:
During the initial startup, Windows installs essential drivers — including the LTE modem driver — and Hilti applications. This setup runs via a script shown in a black Command Prompt (CMD) window.SIM Card Configuration:
After a reboot, another batch script configures the SIM card connection. This includes setting the APN (Access Point Name) for the mobile data provider. Unlike smartphones, Windows tablets often do not receive these settings automatically from the network, so they must be applied manually via script.Language Dependency:
The batch script checks whether the LTE modem is ready by interpreting Windows’ status messages. These messages must be in English, as the script compares them to a predefined English word.
If you have already changed the Windows interface language (e.g. to German or French), the message format changes and the script fails to detect readiness, resulting in the CMD window reappearing at every boot.
Clarified Steps on How to Fix the Issue if Helpful:
To stop the CMD window from reappearing:
Switch Windows display language to English (United States):
Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region
Set English (United States) as the Windows display language
Perform a full shutdown:
Do not use "Shut down" from the Start menu, as this may enter a hibernation-like state
Instead, press and hold the power button for 5–10 seconds until the tablet powers off completely
Restart the tablet:
After the reboot, the script should now complete successfully. The CMD window will no longer appear at startup.(Optional) You may now change the language back to your preferred setting once the SIM configuration has completed.
