Why can't I change certain settings in Power Management or Windows Update on the PLC tablet?

  • Updated

Some settings in Power Management and Windows Update are intentionally locked to ensure optimal performance and stable tool connectivity.

Hilti has custom-optimized the tablet's power management configuration to provide the most stable and reliable wireless connection to Hilti devices — such as layout tools — over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. These settings are carefully tuned to maintain communication stability even in challenging environments.

Allowing users to freely adjust these settings (e.g., to extend battery life) could unintentionally:

  • Reduce radio performance or range

  • Introduce instability in tool connectivity

  • Lead to support cases that are difficult to trace back to power-related changes

To avoid this and ensure consistent performance, we restrict access to specific power-related options.

How do these settings affect driver updates?

Similarly, automatic driver updates are blocked, as well as some Windows Updates functionalities. This is because:

  • New driver versions may introduce unexpected behavior or compatibility issues

  • Every new driver release from hardware vendors cannot be tested immediately for stability

  • Stability and communication quality could be negatively affected without warning

Restricting these updates helps maintain a validated and reliable system environment for layout tools.
